Biography

Yu Yongbo, male, Manchu nationality, was born in 1931 and is a native of Wafangdian City in Liaoning Province. He joined the PLA in 1947 and the Party in 1948. He participated in some of the major campaigns of the Chinese civil war and served in the Korean War at the regimental level.

After returning to China, he served principally as a political commissar specializing in propaganda, and had tours of duty in the Guangzhou and Nanjing military regions. He became a member of the 13th CPC Central Committee in 1987 and was subsequently appointed to both the CPC and PRC military commissions and to the general political department of the PLA, of which he was promoted director in 1992. Yu was ranked lieutenant general in 1988 and general in 1993.

Yu was also a member of the 14th and 15th CPC Central Committees and a member of the 8th NPC and 9th NPC.
