Wu Tao, male, Han nationality, is a native of Beijing. Wu was born in 1940 and studied English language at the Foreign Affairs College from 1978 to 1980.
After serving as a staff member at the international department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for thirteen years, Wu became a staff member and then deputy general manager for the Beijing Services Bureau for Diplomatic Missions. He was promoted to the top position, the director-general, at the bureau in 1989 and remained there for four years.
Wu held several ambassadorships during the 1990s. He was ambassador to Portugal from 1993 to 1994 and ambassador to Russia from 1998 to 2001.
Wu became ambassador to Australia in 2001.
